Construction of dome 1983/84  

 

The Observatory's Dome 1984

 

1971 Foundation as a private astronomical workgroup
1976 Entry in the official register of societies and associations,
Launch of the sunspot observation programme "INTER-SOL" (ISP),
Presentation of the exhibition "Astronomy & Space Flight"
1977 Import of a 102mm (4") refractor - donation by the "Sparkasse" (savings bank)
1981 Establishment of a solar laboratory with a solar telescope
1982 Renaming of the astronomical workgroup into "Volkssternwarte" (Public Observatory),
Move to the top floor and roof of the grammar school in Schloss Neuhaus,
Donation of the 300mm (12") reflector,
First radio broadcast (WDR 2) in Cologne - Germany
1983 Begin of the construction of the observatory's dome
1984 Inauguration of the observatory,
The observatory becomes well-known due to many radio and TV broadcasts
1985 Establishment of the computer center,
Initiative for the Paderborn Planetarium established
1986 Installation of the weather satellite receiver
1989 Takeover of a 3-meter parabolic areal from the University of Paderborn
1990 Paderborn Astrology Tribunal as contrast of an Astrologer's obtaining of
a doctorate at the Bielefeld University.
Three young members of the observatory participate in the "Jugend forscht"
(Youth Researches) contest. Their subject: "Hypersensitization of films and their
use within astronomy". They achieved the first place in the local contest and
the second place in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia
1991 Photo exhibition "Fascinating Universe"
1994 The observatory is host of the 6th convention of the GWUP
1995 Completion of the self-developed computer control for the telescopes
1996 First publication of a "Volkssternwarte Paderborn" picture postcard,
Anniversary celebration "25 years of  Paderborn Observatory / 20 years of Inter-Sol",
For the first time the club has more than 100 members
1997 Completion of the control for the hydraulic 3-meter radio telescope,
The observatory gets its own Internet connection
1998 Completion of the Inter-Sol web site (June),
Completion of the observatory's web site (October)
1999 Extensive refurbishment of our lecture room and
preparation for multimedia lectures and shows
2000 First lectures and classes using the new multimedia equipment
2001 Installation of a media room and archive,
30th Anniversary of the Paderborn Observatory,
25th Anniversary of the INTER-SOL Programme
2002 Acquisition of a new H-Alpha Filter,
Event collaboration with the "Schloss- und Auenparkgesellschaft",
2003 First Publication of a printed annual INTER-SOL brochure,
Modernization of the observatory's computer network, broadband internet connection,
Complete refurbishment of the observatory's photo exhibition area,
Seating in the lecture room replaced,
Co-operation with the "Diözesanmuseum Paderborn" during the
"Wunderwerk" exhibition,
Participation in the "Paderborner Lesenacht",
Participation in the City of Paderborn's image campaign "Paderborn überzeugt",
Highest annual number of visitors in the observatory's history
2004 First publication of a fully-colored, printed annual brochure containing the observatory's
calender of events and detailed information on the year's planned lectures,
Further modernization of the internal computer network,
Refurbishment of the hydraulic 3-meter parabolic areal,
Soft refurbishment of the 300mm Newton/Cassegrain telescope,
Collaboration with WDR 5 radio station during the "WDR-5 Weltraumwoche",
Hosting of an information event for teachers as part of the 35th international
painting competition "Flieg mit zu den Sternen"
2005 Regional TV station WDR airs an "OWL aktuell" programme from our observatory,
Co-operation with the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum Paderborn during the
"Raumschiff Erde" lecture series
2006 Co-operation with the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum Paderborn during the
"Raumschiff Erde" lecture series,
"Sternstunden bei Thalia" event in collaboration with Thalia bookstore, Paderborn,
Acquisition of a new computer control for the telescopes
2007 Participation in the "Planeten in Deutschland" art project in collaboration with
the City of Paderborn, planning and assembly of a fourth-month-long exhibition
in the "Galerie Bilderbogen" at the Stadthaus Am Abdinghof,
Participation in the "NRW-Tag 2007 in Paderborn" with three opening days,
"WDR 5 Sternennacht" event in co-operation with WDR 5 radio station and
the well-known author of astronomical books, Hermann-Michael Hahn
2008 The observatory provides the fitting setting for Bonifatius Buchhandlung's "Das
Schicksal des Universums" guest lecture,
For the first time, a "solar workshop" for children is offered which, due to its
huge success, is held twice,
In co-operation with the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum participation in the
"MuseumsNacht 2008" at the HNF
2009 Participation in the "International Year of Astronomy 2009" through a series
of lectures on astronomical history,
Participation in the "100 Hours of Astronomy" astronomical marathon,
WDR Television's "Kinderzeit" ("Children's Time") visits the observatory
with its "child reporters",
Refurbishment of both the dome and the kitchenette,
Acquisition and installation of a high-quality 350mm (14") Newtonian
telescope as a replacement for the 300mm (12") Newton-Cassegrain,
Installation of a 125mm (5") Kutter-Schiefspiegler telescope, inherited
from a late club member
